What ages do you teach?
I work with students of all ages, and have a WWCC for working with kids. Whether you are enquiring for a young student or are a retiree looking to finally tick off your bucket list, I would be more than happy to meet you.
What kind of piano do I need?
If you are looking to learn piano, I highly advise you buy a keyboard, digital or acoustic piano. If you buy a keyboard, it would be best to find one that has at least 76 weighted keys. If your piano interest is more circumstantial or music theory-based, unweighted keys and a smaller number of keys (down to 49) may potentially be fine as you learn the basics.
Do I need to practice?
Focused practice is integral to improvement in any new skill, and your improvement is directly related to how much time you spend developing skills outside of lesson time. While life can be busy, it is important to dedicate some regular time to refining and solidifying your newly developing skills.
What styles do you teach?
The main music styles I teach for piano and voice are contemporary, musical theatre, and classical music, however depending on the student’s goals, we do at times explore outside of those genres.
Do you work with beginners/advanced students?
I regularly work with students and musicians of all levels in different capacities. Get in touch to let me know your specific situation and we can explore whether I would be the right teacher for you.
What happens in a trial lesson?
I offer no-obligation trial lessons to make sure that I am the right teacher for your learning style and goals. Generally, we spend that lesson getting to know each other, defining your goals, finding out your current level, and exploring where you currently feel more or less confident. I believe that any student learns best when they feel they are in a safe, respectful environment, so the trial lesson is a chance for both student and teacher to ensure that this is a comfortable and productive situation.
Should I do exams?
For some students, exams can be a great way of measuring progress, but for others they are an unnecessary stress. For those who request to do them, I often put students through AMEB, Rockschool and ANZCA exams.
Do you offer casual lessons?
I always offer casual lessons for those who are unable to commit regularly or are in need of only several casual lessons. Let me know when you get in touch if that’s what you’re looking for so that we can plan accordingly!
